About Old Droxford Station - The Signal Box

Old Droxford Station—The Signal Box offers a unique slice of British railway history, having been a landmark on the Meon Valley Line since 1903 and even featuring in Sir Winston Churchill's top-secret D-Day plans. Though the last train whistle has long since faded, the charm of this one-bedroom holiday cottage endures, making it perfect for couples or solo travellers who relish historic charm combined with modern comforts. Situated directly on the traffic-free Meon Valley Trail, it provides an ideal base for those eager to explore the scenic paths on foot or by bike.

Nestled in the tranquil village of Droxford within the South Downs National Park and close to Soberton, the cottage offers easy access to local amenities like The Bakers Arms and The White Horse pubs, both just a 15-minute walk away and known for their local ales and hearty pub fare. The Buckshead Pub, which serves fresh pizzas from their pizza oven, is also just a 20 minute walk up the Meon Valley trail. Additionally, the vibrant market town of Wickham is a short cycle away, where the tradition of weekly markets dating back to 1440 continues every Wednesday and Saturday, alongside shopping opportunities in the charming Victorian Warwick Lane Arcade and other unique local shops.

Beyond Droxford, the area brims with cultural and historical sites. Old Winchester Hill, just a ten-minute drive from the cottage, offers expansive views of the South Downs, perfect for nature lovers and photographers. Literary enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to Jane Austen's house in Chawton and the opportunity to visit her tomb in Winchester Cathedral. Maritime history buffs can explore the historic Portsmouth Docks, home to iconic ships like HMS Victory and the Mary Rose. Gilbert White's House and its beautiful gardens in Selborne provide a peaceful retreat for those inclined towards botanical beauty. With its rich history, excellent location, and comfortable amenities, Old Droxford Station—The Signal Box is an enticing prospect for a memorable holiday in the South Downs.
